Scratchings

Unfortunately, scratchings are common in the Melbourne Cup.

Naturally they affect Melbourne Cup Sweeps.

There are two scenarios :-
  • Scratchings before the Sweep is generated
  • Scratchings after the Sweep is generated

Scratchings before the Sweep is generated

The Sweep Generator will adjust the Entry Page to compensate for any scratchings that are current before the Sweep is generated.

In the following example, there are 2 scratchings - note that 2 entry boxes have been disabled, this indicates that you can only enter 22 names into the Sweep Generator.

Scratchings after the Sweep is generated

The Sweep Coordinator (i.e. YOU) will need to decide your own set of rules to cover this occurrence.

Depending on the number of scratchings, some of your entrants will not have a runner in the race and therefore will be disadvantaged.

You can either :-
  • Refund the money for those whose horse has been scratched. You will then need to adjust the prizemoney.
  • OR
  • Declare before running the Sweep that it is "All In". This means that no refunds will be made if any horses are scratched after the Sweep is generated. No adjustment to the prizemoney would be necessary.
It would be wise of the Sweep Coordinator to promulgate their rules well before the running of the Sweep. As disappointing as it seems, the most common rule is to declare the Sweep "All In".
